what is a cigar humidor
A cigar humidor is a container that provides a suitable storage environment for cigars. There are many types of cigar humidors on the market. Today in this blog, I will introduce you in detail to the different types of cigar humidors.
Electric humidors
Electric humidors use new technology to control temperature and humidity to improve on traditional storage. They provide you with full control over the environment, which makes cigars last longer and taste better. These electric gadgets are not like passive cabinets since they can cool, humidify, and keep an eye on things.
High-end electric humidors from brands like Liebherr and EuroCave use water cooling and variable frequency technology to give you the best control over temperature and humidity and smart administration. These systems use variable frequency compressors to change the amount of power they consume, which saves energy while keeping micron-level accuracy. They also use AI algorithms to guess how the environment will change. Water cooling is quieter and works better than air cooling, so it’s good for big collections and can hold hundreds of cigars, making sure that each layer has the same flavor and distribution.
Multifunctional Designs Integrating Heating and Cooling
NEEDONE’s “Opti-Temp” series of integrated heating and cooling devices combine heating and cooling functions to make it easy to warm up low-temperature spaces in the winter or keep high-temperature settings stable in the summer.

Built-in and Expandable Humidification Systems
A lot of thermoelectric cabinets include built-in water trays, but they don’t have humidifiers. To get precise control over relative humidity (RH), you need to use two-way humidity packs or electronic humidifiers. The NewAir 250 is a good illustration of this because users also have to set up Boveda packs or mini evaporators to keep the RH levels where they want them. This modular design lets you customize it,
Circulation Fan Design
The rear fan in Audew models is an example of a circulation fan design that creates a closed-loop airflow. This makes the humidity more even across the upper and lower layers and cuts down on “humidity settling” events. This is especially good for cabinets that hold a lot of weight, since it makes sure that every cigar stays in the same environment even when the cabinet is full, which helps the cigars age better.

The cabinet-style humidor is usually between 1.2 and 1.8 meters tall and looks like a small closet or wine cabinet. This makes it more useful and saves space. This design makes sure that cigars age evenly by letting gravity work as it should.
The furniture-grade look of the cabinet is one of its best features. It usually has wide tempered glass doors and frames made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy. This material choice not only makes the cabinet last longer, but it also makes it easy to see inside. Users can see their collection via the clear door without having to open the cabinet, which reduces environmental interference. Mid- to high-end models often have double doors (French doors) that make it easy to access different sorts of cigars in different areas.

The main technology that makes cabinet models work is the accurate regulation of humidity. They commonly use electronic humidification systems and very accurate humidity sensors to keep the relative humidity (RH) between 65% and 75%. This range is the greatest area to keep cigars since it keeps them from being too dry or too wet from fermentation, which can cause them to crack. As far as I know, the most commonly used humidification device is the Cigar Oasis Magna system
An active electronic humidification system designed for cabinets ranging in size from 10 to 60 cubic feet is the Cigar Oasis Magna system. With its integrated fans and digital control panels, you can use Wi-Fi to check the humidity level from any location and receive notifications when the water level drops. These systems circulate air to maintain a constant humidity level.

Cabinet-style humidors are now smart since they can be monitored from afar. A lot of models can connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so you may use mobile applications to check and alter the temperature and humidity settings in real time. You may even set your own alarm levels. You may utilize control panels or applications to check on things like humidity, temperature, and system status every day.
Travel Humidors
Travel humidors are different from other simple cigar cases in that they focus on managing humidity actively. They often come with small humidifiers or two-way humidity packs, like Boveda. These parts can either take in extra moisture or let it out to keep the inside climate steady. This design is great for long trips or when the weather changes a lot. It keeps cigars from cracking when they dry out or getting moldy when they get too humid. Boveda packs, for instance, are set to 69% humidity and can control it with an accuracy of ±1%. This is much better than the passive protection of regular sleeves, which keeps the cigars’ original flavor and burn characteristics.

The inside of travel humidors is designed to keep the cigars in place and maintain the humidity. They frequently use high-density polyurethane foam to shape and hold the cigars in place so they don’t get damaged by rolling or bumping against things. Spanish cedar lining is sometimes used in traditional fixed cigar boxes to offer a natural smell and help control humidity. However, travel hard-shell versions employ foam trays and separate humidity control parts like humidity packs or miniature evaporators to better manage humidity. This choice of material keeps cigars stable and flavorful in rough places without adding weight to portable items.

They have double-buckle or multi-buckle locks and stainless steel hinges. They are designed to be airtight, waterproof, pressure-resistant, and drop-resistant. The built-in high-density polyurethane foam trays keep cigars from moving about even more while they are being transported. When combined with built-in humidification systems, these trays may handle longer trips.
Walk-in Humidors
In my opinion, the walk-in humidor is the best way to store cigars. It is a totally enclosed room made just for storing a lot of cigars. It can manage the temperature and humidity very accurately and let cigars age for a long time. A walk-in humidor is more like a bespoke wine cellar than a cigar cabinet, which is small and easy to use. To acquire one, you either have to make changes yourself or hire professionals to build it.
Also, to make environmental management better, a lot of contractors put temperature and humidity sensors in regions where the air moves slowly away from the air outlets. This stops the sensors from getting false readings when the air passes right over them. You can also combine this with smart linked control systems or digital displays that are put on the wall to keep an eye on things and adjust settings in real time. A lot of new humidification systems come with remote control panels or mobile apps that let you check on them from a distance, get alerts regarding temperature and humidity, and change settings on their own. This is great for people who collect cigars and travel a lot. For example, the system can switch on the humidifier and provide notifications if the humidity decreases below a given threshold. In this manner, cigars keep in great shape even when no one is looking at them.
People typically use Spanish Cedar to make shelves or lining because it smells good, keeps humidity consistent, and naturally keeps bugs away. If you don’t have a lot of money, you can mix it with hardwoods like Sipo or Sapeli to get the most performance for the least amount of money. To enhance air flow, shelf designs should use ventilated grid layouts. This will make sure that cigars are evenly exposed to the controlled environment. However, you need to be careful not to use composite materials such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard
The humidification system is the most significant aspect of the walk-in humidor. Common types for walk-in humidors include steam, ultrasonic, spray, and evaporative. Most cigar lovers, on the other hand, select evaporative systems since they gently release moisture and don’t cause oversaturation or water droplet development. High-end current systems use nebulizing technology to make a very fine mist of water with a diameter of only 12 microns. They usually have multi-stage reverse osmosis filtering to make sure the water is clean.
To stop bacteria from growing, this technology needs to be cleaned regularly and placed in the right spot. The humidifier should be on the short side of the room, with air delivery along the long side and outlet blades tilted up at 30–45° to use ceiling reflection for gentle circulation. This will evenly distribute humidity throughout the room instead of just in one area. Low-speed fans or passive ventilation systems are also built into professional designs to keep the air moving without letting air escape.
Desktop Humidors
Desktop humidors look like little boxes that stand on their own and can hold 20 to 60 cigars. They can be put in a corner of a desk, on the top shelf of a cabinet, or in an office break room. Their small size makes them great for making use of horizontal space, and the glass top or clear window lets you see how your cigars are doing.
Strong Sealing Structure
There is a food-safe silicone or rubber sealing strip between the box body and the lid that keeps the box sealed at above 97% RH. When it is opened and closed, the amount of humidity that moves between the interior and outside is kept to a minimum.

Adjustable dividers and trays that slide
There are usually one or two removable cedar wood separators inside that can be adjusted to fit different brands or ring gauges (40 to 60). The slide rails hold the movable trays in place, and you can move them up and down to make it simple to get to or rearrange them. This keeps the collection tidy and visible and stops cigars from getting bent out of shape when they are stacked too tightly.

Optional: Control the temperature
Some high-end desktop models have built-in micro TEC cooling chips or Peltier elements that keep the inside temperature between 16 and 20 °C. This keeps the oils in the cigars from getting too hot on hot summer days. Users may set the desired temperature and humidity with only one button when they use a digital thermostatic control panel. This keeps the system stable all year long.
